Results of the Russian Open Championship in the Dragon Class

Tuesday, 21 August 2012

Sunday was the last day of racing at the Russian Open Championship 2012 hosted by Saint Petersburg Yacht Club. It was also the day where the results would have a decisive influence on the distribution of medals. Unlike last year where the winner could be predicted with great confidence at the beginning of the race, the battle on Sunday continued right until the finish line adding to the excitement.

The racing was blessed by the wind gods unlike on the Friday where racing was abandoned due to lack of wind. Although perhaps a few boats were a little too eager to get underway and were black flagged for being over the starting line. Once there was finally a clean start the Russian teams of Anatoly Loginov, RUS 27 and Eugeniy Braslavets, RUS 88 were the first and quickest off the line and finished the first race of the day in 1st and 2nd place respectively.

The favourable winds continued for the second and final race of the regatta. A record number of six teams, however, were disqualified by the black flag rule; two of those being strong contenders for winning the whole Championship, RUS 27 and RUS 34. Race director, Tatiana Kurbatova, commented; “it certainly added intrigue to the regatta.” The penalties caused significant movement in the standings.
