Knickerbocker Cup : Tiller advances to the Finals and Sehested-Barkow undecided
Sunday, 02 September 2012
Saturday started the third day of the 30 Anniversary of Long Island’s premier Match Racing Series, the Knickerbocker Cup event held at thManhasset Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) in Port Washington, NY. The breeze today began as northerly, became easterly and finished as a southerly. The breeze in the morning was variable.
Today was the day for the semi-finals with Nicholai Sehested, TRE-FOR Match Racing (DEN) up against Sally Barkow, Team Sperry (USA) and William Tiller, Full Metal Jacket Racing (NZL) vs. David Gilmour, Team Gilmour (AUS). The day began with quite a start for the Barkow-Tiller matchup. Barkow managed to grab three penalties right at the start and was black flagged. Match over! They ended the day with a 2-1 score, Sehested over Barkow, forcing another semi-final match on Sunday morning.
The match up between Tiller and Gilmour was no less exciting. With a score of 2-0, Gilmour had to win this match to stay in the game. And in the second match, he stuck with Tiller throughout the course. What provided the edge of the seat drama was that Tiller had captured a penalty along the way, and the downwind race toward the finish was not to be believed. As the two boats neared the finish line, Tiller got into the two boat zone and had rights. Gilmour, with the finish line in sight, tried to take the short way to the line, inside of Tiller and the Race Committee boat. This was excellent strategy on the part of Tiller, luring in Gilmour who only had to get to the finish line to move into another match to stay alive on the way to the Finals. With no room to maneuver, Tiller forced a collision. Penalty Gilmour, Tiller wins. Game over. Gilmour out and Tiller moves into the Finals.
With the weather predicting light winds on Manhasset Bay, it is still up for grabs who will win the coveted Knickerocker Cup. Stay tuned with live streaming with veteran match commentators,
