Wednesday, 24 October 2012
23 Sam Chan's TP52 Freefire and Anthony Root's Archambault 35 Red Kite II, made a clean sweep in their class at the China Coast Regatta and also during the Hong Kong to Hainan Race, to be tied on top of the 2012-13 AYGP Championship. Other class winners Peter Forsythe & Jing Lee's X-55 Xena, Greg Kearns / Tristan Stewart's modified Farr 36 Wicked and Fred Kinmonth/ Nick Burns Mills 40EFG Bank Mandrake have slotted in behind the leaders. By completing two regattas, has given the yachts on the East Asian seaboard a slight advantage, but David Roberts Andaman Cabriolet Da Vinci skippered by Mark Pescott, scored the maximum 19 points at Phuket Raceweek to be trailing by only 11 points. Racing now swings over to SE Asian waters and regional yachts are expected to catch up quickly.
Sam Chan's TP52 Freefire also broke the long standing race record, they already held (FfreeFire 71) by 51m 14s and managed to claim the trifecta - Line Honours and Racing Class 0 Handicap honours plus hang on to win the Overall IRC stakes. Talk about being on a roll, added to the all race victory at the China Coast Regatta, if Sam Chan and Freefire, continue on this vein for the rest of the season, are well on the way to winning the 2012-13 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year awards.
Next up is the Raja Muda Regatta (Nov 16th - 24th) followed a week latter by the Phuket King's Cup (December 1st - 8th). The Royal Langkawi Int. Regatta (Jan 7th - 12th) rings in the New Year and the reformatted Singapore Straits Regatta (Jan 29th - Feb 2nd) brings AYGP racing events on the Western seaboard to a close. All the serious Hong Kong campaigners are now making their way across the South China Sea to compete on these events.
At the end of each five star regatta, points are awarded to all the competing skippers and yachts, based on the final results and are accumulatively displayed on the AYGP Microsite. This pointscore can also be regarded as an annual Big Boat Ranking System for the East and South East Asian region with the eventual winner being crowned the 2012-13 AYGP Skipper and Yacht of the Year.
