Owen and McNamara are Scottish Champions of Champions

Thursday, 25 October 2012

35 boats ranging from Moths to Optimists arrived at East Lothian YC for the www.insurance4dinghies.com  sponsored RYA Scottish Champion of Champions, held on October 20/21. This invite only event is for Scottish Champions and Traveller Champions of their classes.

A forecast of calm on Sunday encouraged Race Officer Jim Sinclair to schedule an extra race on the Saturday to ensure a series with one discard. Breezes were light, touching 10mph occasionally. Four different course shapes gave all the diverse boats the chance to shine. Race 1 was on the M shaped course. Paul Hignett in a Ninja Moth made the most of the reach fest to take this race. Close behind were Chris Owen and Sam McNamara in a Wayfarer.

Owen went one better in the second race, sailed on a windward leeward course in a lighter breeze. Stuart Urquhart took second in a National 18, with Ronnie & Torr Millar in an RS200 third. Owen and McNamara’s good form continued with further wins in the third and fourth races, keeping at bay a pair of RS200’s, sailed by the Millars and Fiona Rigg/ Ashley Martin. There was no racing on the Sunday, so results on Saturday stood.

With a perfect score of three wins, Wayfarer National Champions Owen and McNamara, from Oban SC, had taken a very emphatic victory. The Millars took second place, with Urquhart third, while Rigg was fourth and the first lady helm. First youths were Callum Airlie/ Joe Butterworth in a 420.

The event was sponsored by insurance4dinghies, RYA Scotland, www.caledoniasailing.com , Belhaven Brewery, Yachting Life and www.fotoboat.com .
