2012 RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships: Saskia hangs on | Pawel has a bad day

Friday, 26 October 2012

It took time for the light and flukey wind to settle this morning but when it did two good races in both fleets were run. Neomi Cohen [ISR] was on fire posting two bullets to snatch third spot back from Shahar Tibi [ISR] who is celebrating her 15th birthday today.

Shahar didn't have a good day on the water but she can still make her presence felt in the medal race tomorrow. She's has to beat Neomi by 3 places to take the bronze. Not an insurmountable task when you throw Jeanne Dantes [FRA] and Saskia Sill [GBR] in to the mix.

Saskia extended her lead to 4 points today after Jeanne released the pressure a little but this Youth World Championship is far from decided with a four way shoot out is in prospect.

Factoid: There are 4 U17s in the Youth women's top 10 and 5 countries... all European

Over in the Youth Men's fleet, Pawel Tarnowski [POL] was not on sparkling form for once. A 10 and a 14 [His second discard] meant he let some air out of his overnight 18 point cushion but he still looks comfortable for a 'win' tommorrow [barring irrational disasters, of course]

It was Kieran Martin [GBR] and Yann Dupont [FRA] who took advantage of the light air to close up the points. Kieran has retaken third spot and will have his eyes firmly focused on Martin's second spot overall. There are 5 points in it tonight so it is doable

Mattia Camboni, the Italian prodigy, put in a shocker -23- in race 12 but followed up with a 6 in race 13 so may still make the podium if he can mix it with the Kieran and Martin in the medal race scheduled to start at 1130hrs in what is forecast to be equally light winds

Factoid: There are athletes from 7 countries and 3 continents represented in the Youth Men's top 10

Note: Negotiations to stage the 2013 RS:X Youth World Windsurfing Championships in Civitavecchia just north of Rome are well under way. The chosen date is the last week of October.

The 2013 RS:X Youth European Windsurfing Championships will take place in Brest, France in the first week of July
