Local sailor Lorenzo Chiavarini from Crinan will pick up one of youth sailings most prestigious awards in the New Year, the RYA Scottish Regional Young Sailor of the Year Award 2012, in recognition of his outstanding achievements to the sport throughout the year.
When asked what the highlights of his 2012 season were and what results have helped him to win this award Lorenzo said:
“The main highlight of the 2012 season has to be winning the European Championships Under 19's in Belgium in August.
“But looking back, there have been so many opportunities and highlights that contributed to my improvement and to getting to the podium. I was invited to train alongside the Olympic Training Squad after the New Year at the winter base in Palma. In spring I was then selected to sail with Team GBR in the World and European Championships.
“I achieved my goals in the World Men’s Championships in Germany and the Men’s Europeans in Hourtin, where I was ranked in the top youth sailors, and as a result was offered a place in the GBR Olympic Transitional Squad.
“I aimed to medal in the European Youth Championships the following month and was thrilled to top the podium and to be named European Champion.
When asked how he felt about winning the award and what benefit it would bring to him Lorenzo commented:
“The news gave me a sense of pride that took me back to 2008 when as a young Topper sailor and I won the Young Sailor of the Year Award for Scotland for the 1st time. The award completes what has been a great year for me and it is an honour to be nominated. I would like to thank all those concerned and also thanks to so many for the support, training and guidance over the years.”
In the 2013 season Lorenzo will be looking forward to competing in the ISAF World Series and also to the Euro ISAF Series.
On Saturday 12 January 2013 at the Tullett Prebon London International Boat Show, Lorenzo, will join 12 other RYA Regional Award winners from all over the UK for a VIP day out at the show including the eagerly anticipated awards ceremony at which they will receive their trophy.
The RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year awards recognise the outstanding impact young people have made to UK boating, whether it’s on the race course, at their club, overcoming adversity or through an exceptional achievement.
RYA Chief Executive Sarah Treseder says: “Winning an RYA Regional Young Sailor of the Year Award is a huge achievement and this year we are delighted to see such a broad selection of winners. We have youngsters who have given up their time and shown real dedication to their clubs whilst others have achieved outstanding results out on the race course. All regional winners are a fantastic representation of youth in our sport”.
