Basic Facts & Figures
The German Youth America's Cup team and former Match Racing World Champion Jablonski in the line up
The entry list of participants for the 16th Match Race Germany is closed and once again displays an outstanding line-up of what the world of matchracing has to offer: Leading the international top-class field are reigning and four-times British Match Race World Champion Ian Williams and his Team GAC Pindar, the Swedish runner-up of the last season’s World Championship Bjorn Hansen and his Hansen Sailing Team and also AWMRT season’s third Phil Robertson and his WAKA Racing Team from Australia.
Twelve teams representing eight nations will fight from 15th till 20th of May, over the Pentecost-weekend at the Grand Prix of Germany. Approximately 50,000 U.S. dollars in prize money are at stake. Match Race Germany is the only German tour stop of Alpari World Match Racing Tour and this year. For the second time Match Race Germany will mark the much-anticipated season opener and thus the starting point for the quest to win the World Championship.
Three skippers with a German passport want to shake up the elite of international match racers in Langenargen on Lake Constance, amongst them the Polish-German skipper and past match race world champion Karol Jablonski as well as the reigning German Match Race champion Sven Erik Horsch and his Hamburg based NRV Match Racing Team. Starting for the first time in a World Championship race will be Laser European Champion Philipp Buhl who is also skipper of the successful German Youth America's Cup Team. "We have awarded the young guys a wild card, although they are not designated match race experts yet. But we want to encourage their great talent and give them the opportunity to gain a world-class new experience in the duel discipline of sailing that they also have to master in the the Youth America's Cup in September", says Match Race Germany's sports director Eberhard Magg," and who knows, maybe they can come up with some surprises. Definitely we welcome this initiative of the Youth Sailing Team Germany.“
The situation is quite different for Karol Jablonski: The 2007 Match Race World Champion was one of the most successful five America's Cup helmsman of the world before the Cup holders and hence rulemakers opted for racing on giant catamarans. Jablonski´s ambitions were abruptly terminated. Nevertheless, he celebrated his comeback in Match Race Germany last year. The early exit is still painful memories for the man with the nickname "Great White Shark" who is well known and feared by some for his inimitable aggressive style of sailing.
"There are regatta weeks in which nothing works. Match Race Germany in 2012 was just one of those. This year we want to sail more on a winning wave and be successful in the matches with the world and vice world champion", says Karol Jablonski not being shy to declare his ambitions towards the favorites for the 2013 edition of Match Race Germany. The stage is et for some phenomenal battles on the water. The German-Polish Match Race professional has just tanked new self-confidence winning the Iceboating European Championship in the DN class, where he successfully defended his 2012 title. King of ice yachts they call him rightfully, with seven World and five European championships on his account. But can the former world’s number one ranked match racer also climb back to the top in sailing’s most media friendly and very traditional discipline?
Definitely 50 year old Jablonski wants to do more than well in the opener of the 2013 Alpari World Match Racing Tour, "I love the discipline of match racing and Match Race Germany is a really great event, always well organized and attended by a huge crowd along the shores and in the regatta viallage," said Jablonski, "in my long career, I often sailed against Williams and Hansen. The duels were almost always very exciting. I am glad that they are coming too! "
Sven Erik Horsch, skipper of the young NRV match race team, starts with modest goals into the regatta run by hosting Yacht Club Langenargen: "We will definitely not want to finish last! A dream would be to reach the quarter-finals. I would throw a round of champagne for my team in case..." Horsch and his crew from the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein in Hamburg celebrate their first appearance at the classic on Lake Constance. The German Match Race Champion qualified for the first time and looks forward to the racing in front of a large audience. Says Horsch, "match racing is by far the most attractive discipline for spectators in the sport of sailing. We look forward to feel the crowd at Lake Constance and hope to be able to set up the stars a little bit."
The organizers are expecting more than 35,000 fans in and around the Langenargener Gondola Harbour and along the shores of Lake Constance. Together with its existing and loyal, but also new partners like Porsche and Adidas with their „SOUL- AND SAILTAINMENT“ the organizers have designed an eventful programme for the whole family, offering an almost 24/7 pentecost pleasure both on and off the water. The programme includes attractions from "Sailors Brunch" to "Sail Experience" for young and old. Dance and beer, typical German tents will host live bands and the crowds every evening. The opening ceremony will traditionally be celebrated in the Castle of Montfort, which delivers a magnificent backdrop for the racing action. Not only photographers love it...
