HydroContest: The university competition has been launched

While part of the team is chasing down, the “Blue Ribbon”, a speed record on Lake Geneva with l'Hydroptère.ch, and Hydros sailors are preparing the Class C World Championship in Falmouth (UK), Team Hydros has launched the HydroContest, a competition for university students in technical and engineering schools. Their challenge? Build a transport boat that is both fast and energy efficient.

Lausanne, April 24, 2013 – Team Hydros has officially launched the HydroContest, a competition which was made possible thanks to a collaboration with the ETH Lausanne (EPFL) and to the support of Lombard Odier & Cie and the Services Industriels de Genève (SIG).

Combining awareness and common sense 

The goal of the HydroContest is to raise future architects’ and engineers’ awareness on energy problems, particularly in the area of maritime transport. They will be encouraged to develop and test new technologies applicable to maritime transport. 

“This project carries on the research on energy efficiency that Team Hydros has been conducting for several years,” explains Thierry Lombard, founder of Hydros. “The transfer of knowledge has always been important to us. We hope that this competition will make the next generation aware of the challenges of maritime transport.”

Identical starter kits – May the best team win!

Twenty starter kits developed by Team Hydros will be delivered to competing teams. Each team will then have the same challenge: to change, develop or optimize their starter kits. In order to reach their goal, students can build hydrofoils as well as change the shape of the wings, the fuselage or anything else that could reduce energy consumption and improve drive performance. 

Student teams will compete in two categories: boats with lighter transport loads (Category: Passenger Ships) and sea freighters (Category: Container Ships). 

An invitation has been sent out to major universities. The starter kits will be handed over to all participants in September. The teams will then have two semesters to work on the issue of energy efficiency and come up with a working solution. 

Rendez-vous in Lausanne

At the beginning of summer 2014, approximately twenty universities will assemble on the shores of Lake Geneva in front of the EPFL to compare the results of their work. The event will be both fun and educational. In addition to the competition, visitors will enjoy live music, information stands, conferences and scientific models. 

“In addition to scientific research and technical developments, the contest also aims to provide an opportunity for the various stakeholders – students, partners, professionals and institutions – to meet, exchange ideas and get to know each other,” explains Jérémie Lagarrigue, director of HYDROS.

Headquartered at EPFL, the Swiss company Hydros (Hydroptère Suisse SA) is a unique hub for research and development in the field of optimization for materials used in both water and air. Hydros mainly consists of three pillars: HydroCup (participation in the World Cup by Class C Boats with its wholly developed energy-efficient boats), HydroContest (worldwide competition among technical universities) and HydroRecord (an application that allows each individual to record and register record attempts on a smartphone). 

In 2013 Hydros will represent Switzerland in the World Championships for Class C Boats, called the “Little America’s Cup”, with two boats and crews. Last year, the team set records for distance and speed on Lake Geneva. At the World Championships, Hydros will compete against the best sailing teams in the world. Along with this global competition, the HydroContest will be launched at technical universities. 

The vision of Hydros, which includes both research and development, and the involvement of corporations, contributes to the development of sustainable energy and the acquisition of new knowledge through sport. The findings, of course, will not only be valuable to sport, but will also be useful for industrial projects that advance increased energy efficiency and renewable energies.
