Audi Hamilton Island Race Week: Sydney skipper Peter Sorensen sets sight on new Audi Q7

Veteran Middle Harbour Yacht Club skipper Peter Sorensen is one race away from winning his career best trophy in the prestigious Audi Hamilton Island Race Week Regatta tomorrow (Saturday)

Sorensen already has an impressive array of Australian and World championship trophies displayed on the mantelpiece of his Sydney home in the Northern Beaches.

Naturally he is proud of his career achievements but his form at Hamilton Island will be rewarded with a career best trophy when he and his Philosophers Club crew seal a deserved win in the Audi Australian IRC championship.

The Sydney solicitor invested some of his superannuation savings to buy the new Iain Murray designed Sydney Yachts Cruiser Racer 36 Philosophers Club which was launched in December specifically to contest the opening regatta of the prestigious Audi Australian championship at Geelong in January.

Skipper Sorensen and his Philosophers Club crew became the championship favourite to win the new Audi A 7 when they outsailed a strong fleet then adding further important points to their national title challenge by winning their class during the Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta in March.

The talented crew of good skiff sailing mates have continued with their outstanding form over the windy Whitsunday Island courses during the past week scoring four impressive wins in the demanding Island Passage races.

There was a wry smile on the suntanned face of Sorensen when he steered Philosophers Club to another impressive performance in the Long Island Sound race.

This performance has moved the popular skiff racing veteran a step closer to winning his first major offshore championship and the most valuable trophy of his career.

As usual skipper Sorensen complimented his crew – “I just sit in the back and steer the boat they (the crew) get Philosophers Club over the line , no skipper can be successful unless they have the right people pulling the strings” He said.

The Philosophers Club crew have certainly pulled the right strings with the small sloop favoured to wrap up the title with a perfect score in the Molle-Daydream Island Race on Saturday.
