U.S. Match Racing Championship: Hardesty holds on to lead after First Round Robin concludes

Saturday, 21 November 2009

Racing was limited today on day two at US SAILING's 2009 U.S. Match Racing Championship (USMRC), due to insufficient winds. The ten elite teams representing the skipperss home yacht clubs finished the first of two round robins today by completing the remaining two flights.

Leader, Bill Hardesty (Chicago Match Race Center) lost his first match of the championship to Taylor Canfield (St. Thomas Yacht Club). Hardesty's lead over Canfield was cut to one point. Three-time U.S. Match Racing Champion, Dave Perry (Pequot Yacht Club), had a big day by going 2-0. He moved into sole possession of third place. Chris Nesbitt (Balboa Yacht Club) is tied for fourth.

This year's USMRC is hosted by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (Fla.). Teams are racing this year in Sonars on the waters of Tampa Bay. The second round robin begins Saturday morning. Partly cloudy conditions with moderate winds are forecasted for tomorrow. Racing runs through Sunday, Nov. 22.
