China Cup International Regatta (CCIR) is proud to announce today the appointment of 17-year-old Australian sailing sensation Jessica Watson as Ambassador for this year’s China Cup. Jessica is the world’s youngest sailor to accomplish the remarkable feat of sailing around the world solo, non-stop and unassisted at the tender age of 16 years.
Eileen Fu, Vice President of the CCIR Organising Committee says “Sailing is more than just a sport or a lifestyle. Sailing is about passion, dedication and commitment and the values CCIR has upheld since inauguration four years ago. Jessica Watson is the perfect epitome of such values and we’re thrilled to have her on board as Ambassador for this year’s China Cup.”
Jessica embarked on her sailing adventure against all odds despite critics describing the journey as too arduous for someone so young. She braved seven months of treacherous storms and seas and returned to Australia earlier this year to tens of thousands of well-wishers and supporters eager to applaud the courage of this young woman.
Excited about her role as this year’s China Cup ambassador, Jessica enthuses, “I had a dream and I believed in it. That’s how I constantly challenge myself to go beyond my physical and mental limits to better myself. I am delighted, and not to mention, very proud to be appointed Ambassador for this year’s China Cup. I hope I can inspire other young sailors and serve as motivation for them to pursue their dreams, just like I did.” Jessica began sailing at the age of eight and currently has over 35,000 nautical miles under her belt.
Jessica’s appointment demonstrates the commitment to contribute to the development of sailing in both countries and reflects China’s commitment to promote sailing as a competitive sport in China. The China Cup International Regatta is currently in its fourth year running and has grown leaps and bounds into the definitive sailing regatta in Asia with an international bill of teams from all around the world including UK, United States, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, France, Israel, Estonia, Thailand, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and China.
