HMS NORTHUMBERLAND, a Royal Navy Type 23 Frigate, was diverted early Wednesday evening to provide urgent assistance in the Bay of Biscay to stricken yachtswoman Dee Caffari whose yacht ‘Aviva’ had dismasted in the early hours of Wednesday morning
|
Responding to a call from Fleet Headquarters at Northwood, NORTHUMBERLAND’s Commanding Officer, Cdr Martin Simpson RN, quickly mustered his command team to consider what assistance could be provided whilst at the same time altering from his navigation track to proceed at best speed to the last known position of the ‘Aviva’, some 160 miles north west of Cape Finesterre.
