Leg 5, the longest and toughest so far of the Volvo Ocean Race, has a winner. Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing crossed the line after 18 days, 23 hours, 30 minutes and 10 seconds of sailing.

But the week was not so easy for the fleet. The deep blue provided them the best and the worst of times, 5 of the 6 teams rounded Cape Horn, however Dongfeng Race Team broke their mast and had retire from the leg.
After 12 days at sea, their race was cut short in an instantů

While Dongfengs world crashed down around them for others this was a moment of jubilation, especially aboard lead boat Team Alvimedica with her rookie crew, for many their first time around the Horn.

Meanwhile, Dongfeng Race Team limped into Usuhaia, Argentina to evaluate the damage. Finally they decided to retire from leg 5 and to deliver the boat to Itajai by engine to be ready to start leg 6.

Two days later Team SCA rounded Cape Horn. For the female team, this was an extra special moment as they remembered their coach Magnus Olsson, who passed away in 2013.

The fleet endured the worst of the South Atlantic Ocean, tough weather
40 knots of wind, almost survival conditions just a few days before they arrive to Itajai (Brazil).
The last miles were tied, anything could happen and anyone could win or lose in the last tacks heading to Itajai. The first four boats were sailing together with no more than 10 miles between them, so the final approach was crucial to success.
Finally the Emirati team lead by Ian Walker made it, they crossed the finish line first taking their 2nd victory of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015
Second was MAPFRE with a huge welcome from thousands of spectators as local sailor Andre Fonseca was on board.

Third was the rookie American crew of Team Alvimedica who managed to arrive to Itajai after 19days 24minutes and 32 seconds of sailing.

Disappointed faces on board Team Brunel after crossing the line in fourth place. Once again, the Dutch lost out on the podium in the last miles of the leg.

Meanwhile the female squad of Team SCA were struggling to arrive in Brazil. After breaking a rudder they will be in Itajai on Tuesday afternoon.
