Video: Volvo Ocean Race - Leg 7 arrivals: Dongfeng Race Team blow chance to cut deficit at top
|
Dongfeng Race Team missed a golden chance to close the gap on Volvo Ocean Race leaders Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing here on Wednesday when they lost out to Team Alvimedica in a thrilling battle for third place on Leg 7.
The pair were chasing the final podium spot after Team Brunel had edged out Spanish boat MAPFRE earlier in Lisbon. A botched tack manouevre cost Dongfeng Race Team in their battle with Team Alvimedica, allowing Charlie Enright's (USA) crew to beat them with just 55 seconds to spare. The result means that the Chinese boat only cut Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing's overall lead by one point to five with two legs remaining next month to Lorient (France) and Sweden (Gothenburg). The Emirati boat finished fifth, well behind the leading four.
he all-female crew of Team SCA finished sixth, some four hours and 22 minutes astern of Team Brunel.
The final two stages, to Lorient (France) and then Gothenburg (Sweden) via a pit-stop in The Hague (Netherlands), will once again be contested by seven boats.
Team Vestas Wind (Chris Nicholson/AUS) rejoin the fleet for the first time since November 29 when the boat was grounded on a reef in the Indian Ocean. After a four-month rebuild in the Persico boatyard in Bergamo, Italy, the boat was transported by sea and road to Lisbon, arriving a few hours before the rest of the fleet in the small hours of Wednesday morning.Over the next few days, the rig will be stepped ahead of the Danish-backed team's competitive comebackon June 6 in the Lisbon In-Port Race. Leg 8 to Lorient, a relative sprint at 647nm, begins a day later.
The race concludes on June 27 with the In-Port Race in Gothenburg after nine months and 38,739nm of sailing, visiting 11 ports and every continent.
